3rd Grade – Place Value Math Games

Share

Due to high numbers at our school, I am being moved into a 3rd grade teaching position!  I am very pleased with the news, because I have taught 3rd grade before and LOVED it!  This will be my 7th year teaching, and I am so looking forward to continue to improve on my teaching.  I will now be able to post lots on what I am doing in the classroom.  I start with my new class on Monday!  How exciting!

Being a Math Resource teacher, for the few weeks that I was, was very beneficial to me.  I read so many great math books this summer and look forward to useing what i’ve learned.  I also had the opportunity to go into 4th and 5th grade classrooms during math and help struggling students.  They all seemed to be reviewing place value at the time, and many students were struggling with the same concepts.  I also remember my 3rd graders struggling with place value.  It seems that learning rules is not enough.  The students need to be able to make sense out of numbers and not just memorize rules.  Students will end up forgetting one step and get the entire problem wrong.  They aren’t able to even realize that the answer they came up with isn’t reasonable.

Anyways, one of my goals this year is for my students to understand that math makes sense.  I want them to be able to solve math problems in ways that make sense to them.  I don’t want them to just memorize algorithms (yes those are also important).

So– I am going to have math groups and math stations.  I have created two more games to review place value.  These are below.

I saw students up to 5th grade struggle with the word form to standard form, so I wanted to make sure to make this station.

I always try to place these at a very low price.  You may purchase both for $2.00 by clicking here.
